EU Should Cut Trade With Israel

A letter in the Independant calls for the EU to cut trade ties with Israel based on Israel's repeated violation of international law, which implicates their trade treaty withthe EU.

EU should cut trade ties with Israel

Sir: It is now more than a year since the advisory ruling of the International Court of Justice that the construction by Israel of the separation wall in the occupied West Bank is illegal in international law and should cease forthwith. It ruled that those portions of the wall built on Palestinian land should be torn down and reparations made by Israel to those whose lives had been harmed by it. It also stated that all States party to the Geneva Convention are under an obligation to ensure compliance by Israel. On 20 July 2004, the UN General Assembly in emergency session passed a resolution by 150 votes to six accepting the advisory ruling. Those voting for the resolution included the UK and other European states.

I note that Israel has ignored the ruling and the UN vote, continues to build the wall and expand its settlements in the West Bank, also declared illegal by the ICJ in the same ruling, and that no attempts appear to have been made by the UK or other European governments to ensure Israel's compliance. Israel enjoys substantial trading advantages with Europe under the EU-Israel Association Agreement, an essential condition of which is that Israel maintains "respect for human rights". This condition is clearly being violated, and I believe that Europe should now suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

DR MIKE BARNES,

WATFORD, HERTFORDSHIRE

He make a good case.

Wonder how many people agree with this gentleman? Most who are fully educated on the subject no doubt do.

The only reason Isr gets aways with what they do is the US. Unbelievable that we taxpayers have been so suckered over the years by our own congress in supporting this special case who doesn't want to abide by the rules the rest of the world does.

Welcome back Gorilla.

Israel does a remarkable restraining itself in the face of viruently racist and fascist neighbors who, among other things, send kids with bombs strapped to their chest to kill as many Jews as possible. No one fights a war perfectly, but Israel's actions are far more restrained than, say, the U.S. or Russia in their "war on terror."

"Wonder how many people agree with this gentleman? Most who are fully educated on the subject no doubt do."

Actually r, most who are fully educated probably do not. You, on the other hand, probably do. But you are likely not "fully educated."

I'd like to go on record as not only agreeing with the position, but finding it difficult to imagine how anyone could disagree with it--facts are, after all, facts.

Unless of course you see all issues in the world through the prism of tribal interest--then there is no such thing as facts and everything just boils down to who can mount the biggest public relations campaign.

I notice you didn't actually dispute any of the factual claims made in the letter. Your own factual claim on the other hand, that "Israel does a remarkable restraining itself ... ", is almost universally disputed--by everyone from Medicines Sans Frontieres to Amnesty International to the United Nations to the World Court, and by almost every country of Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and South America.

Israel's goal is not to "restrain itself", but to inflict an occupation so unbearable on the Palestinians that they eventually give up and move elsewhere. This is so Israel can continue the annexation of the rest of the West Bank--a process which began immediately after they conquered the land in 1967 (and some would argue began even further back, with the original idea of Zionism).

The fact is that the wall was built to keep racist terrorists out, and that it has worked quite well.

not just terrorists, but "racist" terrorists. sounds nasty.

(but why didn't you build the wall on your OWN land?)

(but why didn't you build the wall on your OWN land?)

Well, it's not "my" own land, since I'm an american, not an Israeli. But to briefly answer.

1) Because terrorists try to kill Israelis on both sides of the Green Line.

2) Even without settlements, the Green Line was never defensible in all of its spots and still isn't, even with a wall. It is necessary in some cases to block off terrorists before they get to the border.

3) Because the Arabs, including the Palestinians, have insisted since 1949 that the green line was not a border, but an armistice line. Given that, it doesn't make sense for the Israelis to treat as a border when the Arabs have refused to do so.

4) In some cases, building a wall along the Green line doesn't make much sense for anyone involved. A good example is the sister towns of Baka El-Gharbia and Baka El-Sharkia, two sister Arab villages split by "the Green line." Israel wisely incorporated Baka El-Sharkia (the "Palestinian" town) on to Israeli side of the wall. The townspeople were able to visit their family, and get to their jobs in Israel.

In response to the ICJ ruling, Israel built the wall in that area along the Green Line. Now family members can't see each other, people can't get to their jobs. And of course, Israel haters now say that Israel is "dividing towns" with the Apartheid wall. In fact, it was those who advocated for the "Green Line" that screwed the Palestinians. Congratulations.

"Because terrorists try to kill Israelis on both sides of the Green Line."

But if they're trying to kill Israelis that are on the Palestinian side of the Green Line, then they're not "terrorists" but freedom fighters against an illegal occupation, aren't they?

"Because the Arabs, including the Palestinians, have insisted since 1949 that the green line was not a border."

I strongly suggest you do a little research on the Arab League's repeated peace proposals to Israel before you continue spreading this nonsense. (This is just part of the phony "they'll drive us into the sea" narrative.)

No, they're still terrorists if they try to kill non-combatants, even if they are settlers.

"I strongly suggest you do a little research on the Arab League's repeated peace proposals to Israel before you continue spreading this nonsense. (This is just part of the phony "they'll drive us into the sea" narrative.)"

Ah yes, because the Arabs made a "peace proposal" when they accepted the UN partition plan which Israel rejected. They made another peace proposal after 1967, but the Jews went down to Khartoum and said "No Peace, No Negotiations, No Recognition." Because the Arabs offered a complete end of conflict at Camp David in 2000, but the Jews walked away from the table, and then started their intifada."

If the Arab League respects Israel's borders inside the Green Line, they can do one simple thing. Recognize the country and open an embassy.

oh anonymous, there you go again...

If you can't factualy support your defense of Israel's actions you resort to insults and tired, hollow talking points that are so mythical and laughable that you can't be responded to..

Let's do a reality check...if I am someone who everyone has supposedly hated since the begining of time for no reason....if I have claimed victim status since the begining of time because the Christians hated me, the Russians hated me, the Germans hated me, the Franch hate me, the British hate me, the UN hates me, the Arabs now want to kill me and that basically everyone in the world that knows me hates me or my sect..if I claim I have been run out of every country on earth thur no fault of my own or my sect and that is why I need a country with only my own kind in it...if I claim everyone in the world lies but me and my kind....if I claim I am a special case and no rules apply to me...well...after a while I think I would start looking at my own behavior for clues about why I am not liked or trusted...after 20 centuries and no change in what you claim is hatred of zionism or Jews or Israel for no reason at all it's time for a little introspection, don't you think?

While this doesn't apply to all Jews, it certainly applies to those zealot zionist and their easily brainwashed followers.

And if you indeed American maybe you should start thining about what is good for America.

I see, so if you have been subjected to pogroms and genocide, well it must be YOUR fault!

And of course, this all happened to Jews before there was Zionism. But that point is lost on you.

R, this is pretty bad, even for the low standards which I expect for you!

anonymous dear...

I think my standards are pretty level, neither high nor low...just common sense.

Trying to debate the historical victimhood of the jews is like sitting in a tar pit...and no doubt there are many groups who have been persecuted through out the centuries that are long forgotten or gotten over.

I refer to the zionist of today who are probably a lot like the jewish extremist of yesteryear...the Feith's and Leddens and Pipes and so on's who were raised on a steady diet of boogy men and Hitler's under every bed and Betar extremism and for whom Judism is not a religion but a political movement in which they see themselves as powerful players. And as such they continue the tradition of brainwashing and using scare tactics to keep you fellow Jews in line behind their ambitions by keeping alive the old anti-semitism and victimhood identity mentality.

So I think it perfectly reasonable to encourage jews like yourself to pause and look at what these particular jews are projecting to the world about jews in general and ask themselves if their enemy isn't within instead of without...maybe it's time for the jews to clean up the jews...in fact there are several jewish organizations trying to do that exact thing.

If you enjoy your victimhood, stick to it if it makes you happy. Although I personally can't understand how living your life fearful because of being jewish would be very enjoyable.
