Seeing the Light (Updated)

Walter Jones was a staunch supporter of the Iraq war. He is the man who came up with the "Freedom Fries" idea. More recently he has come to the conclusion that he, and the American people, were sold a false bill of goods.

It was a culinary rebuke that echoed around the world, heightening the sense of tension between Washington and Paris in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. But now the US politician who led the campaign to change the name of french fries to "freedom fries" has turned against the war.

Walter Jones, the Republican congressman for North Carolina who was also the brains behind french toast becoming freedom toast in Capitol Hill restaurants, told a local newspaper the US went to war "with no justification".

[...]

Now Mr Jones appears to agree. Asked by a reporter for the North Carolina News and Observer about the name-change campaign - an idea Mr Jones said at the time came to him by a combination of God's hand and a constituent's request - he replied: "I wish it had never happened."

Although he voted for the war, he has since become one of its most vociferous opponents on Capitol Hill, where the hallway outside his office is lined with photographs of the "faces of the fallen".

"If we were given misinformation intentionally by people in this administration, to commit the authority to send boys, and in some instances girls, to go into Iraq, that is wrong," he told the newspaper. "Congress must be told the truth."

Better late than never. You should send an e-mail to Rep. Jones thanking him for seeing the light. (UPDATE: use BELHAVEN and 27810 as city and zip code.)

It will be interesting to see if a "well financed candidate" decides to make a run for his seat.

I also note that I had to read about this in the English press.

Link.

UPDATE:

I forgot that Walter Jones was the congressman who, along with Wes Clark, asked Richard Perle some touch questions at the Armed Services Committee. This was reported on by GIR I here.

A link to the audio of the exchange is provided along with the times of the key exchanges. Very interesting.

The vast majority of Americans are almost completely ignorant of Middle East affairs, in particular of the Israeli-Palestinain conflict. Of those who do possess some knowledge of this Conflict, I would venture to say that most have been fed (and believe)the standard Zionist lies--due to time and space constraints, I will not discuss these matters. Zionist control of our Middle East policy and our media is almost complete--and it is having the desired affect. AIPAC keeps our Congress in line on anything regarding Israel, and any Congressman/woman stepping out of line will feel the wrath of Jewish Power. Not only have Americans been dumbed down, they are currently being bombarded with trash TV programming ("reality shows", Sex In the City, Desperate Housewives, etc.). I have much more to say, but, again, time constraints...

I just called Mr. Jones's office and congratulated him on his new stance regarding the war.

I was totally disgusted by his 'FREEDOM FRIES' campaign knowing what I knew about the liars in the Bush cabal regartding Iraq.

But at least he is honest enough to know that he was wrong because he was lied to!

We need more honest ones like him in congress!!!

Reading this article… and aside from the trite statement of the obviouse, it made me wonder why, suddenly, would one go and publicly declare ones self an idiot? It is akin to Zhirinovsky getting up in the middle of a session and declaring, “I am a clown”; none would flinch…! It wouldn’t even be funny.
Hence for me this is about vindication. After all, to say that someone “miscalculated” with the occupation would mean the situation in Iraq is somehow other than that what is expected. Um…, McFly!- to the American public that is…
The “Bushies & Co.” perfectly knew what was going to happen and everything has gone according to plan. The historic, human, and other casualties are irrelevant at best and are mostly welcome. At face value, a statement like this in politics is like telling a cop that you have an open bottle in the trunk. However admitting a mistake makes collusion not an option. Well I’d be a monkey’s uncle!

Waking up to a serious situation (even in the course of ones back-peddling) is hardly a new situation when involving Congress.

This Individual was pursuant to his beliefs but failed to utilize factual information to support his viewpoint.

I can however state that the fact that this individual managed to overcome his opposition to the idea that we may be wrong in having pursued the course of action taken which indicates that he cold either have come to a realization or instead be a "deflection" of some form or another.

I am glad to see an individual (personally) be "adult" enough to remain flexible in their decision making and political processing abilities and not become forever trapped in a spiraling downwardly plunge into the abyss of denial and half truths as most congress (if not all) are today.

In answer to the poster who asked why an idiot (Jones) would go public with his idioticy...

Jones is not a bad person but a holy roller misguided christian and somewhat lazy fellow who has never done anything but keep a low profile and go along to get along so he can keep his seat. One of two things has happened; he realizes his district is not happy, or he truely did have an awakening.

However, as much as it gags me,I am going to write him a letter thanking him and including a few suggestions for going forward, and send it to his home in Farmville NC so I can be sure he will read it and not just one of his staffers.

Bush and the Congress are traitors.
Congress alone is delegated the power to declare war. Iraq did not attack America. Bush took America to war unconstitutionally and the Congress became complicit in his treason.
