Bob Novak on AIPAC

Bob Novak is hard to peg sometimes, particularly on Iraq. He has connections into neocon bastions such as National Review, however, he often goes against the party line.

He also played a role in the Plame affair which was related to the Niger-Yellow-Cake story.

After reading a transcript of Capital Gang he does seem to have US interests in mind.

Excerpt:

NOVAK: I think it had a lot to do with it. You know, the Israelis claim this -- this is AIPAC. Well, AIPAC is a -- is a function of the Israeli government. It's a lobbying function. And to have a mole inside the Pentagon giving them classified information -- but the point is that all the information out -- and this is put out by U.S. officials -- this information was going from AIPAC to the Israeli government. And they were -- Franklin was cooperating with them until one of the television networks broke -- broke the story and stopped the investigation.

You can't say it more straightforwardly than that.

Bob Novak a patriot! That's a joke, right? The guy who outed Valerie Pfame is no patriot. In fact, he should be in jail.

Either you are joking or your standard of patriotism is that anyone who hates Jews and Israel (and ex-Jew Novak sure does) is a patriot.

Novak is a nasty, lying racist (anti-black, anti-Jew, anti-gay) right-winger.

I understand where you are coming from. However, I feel OK describing him as a patriot in this blog as he is right on this issue, and this is a single issue blog.

I also note that patriot means:

One who loves, supports, and defends one's country.

Bob clearly meets this definition based on the exchange discussed in the entry.

That said, I will try to soften the entry to acknowledge that some may disagree with Bob on other issues.

Thanks, Brian.
But no racist can be a patriot.

The bottom line is that Novak is only "right" on this issue because he hates Jews. He hated them when he was one and has now hooked up with the most anti-semitic segment of the RC church.

And no patriot would out a CIA agent. He is a traitor.

I toned the post down a bit.

I no longer make any sweeping judgements. I just put forth the statement he made.

I will note that Bob converted from Judiasm to Catholcism, so claiming he hates Jews is a bit hard to believe.

Fact is, you just don't get statements like this from national media figures very often, so we should go out of our way to acknowlege them.

You are going to need help from all sources if you want to get any traction whatsoever on this issue.

For over two years, Congress has known that AIPAC was suspected of running a spy operation against the United States, and for those two years, members of Congress went right on taking money from the members of AIPAC.

Larry Franklin worked in the Pentagon Office of Special Plans, run by Richard Perle, at the time Perle (who was caught giving classified information to Israel back in 1970) was insisting that Iraq was crawling with weapons of mass destruction requiring the United States to invade and conquer Iraq. There were no WMDs, of course, and Perle has dumped the blame for the “bad intelligence” on George Tenet. But what is known is that the Pentagon Office of Special Plans was coordinating with a similar group in Israel, in Ariel Sharon’s office.

Iraq - The Trail of Disinformation
http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/trailofdisinformation.html
So, this is the trail of the lies that started a war, beginning at the White House, and via Dick Cheney moving upstream to the Pentagon's Office of Special Plans, under Wolfowitz and Feith, then from OSP to a parallel group operating out of Ariel Sharon's office in Israel.

"I will note that Bob converted from Judiasm to Catholcism, so claiming he hates Jews is a bit hard to believe."

Actually, some of the Jews' most damaging enemies throughout time were converts who then spread stories of the blood libel, etc.

I would not hold it against Novak that he converted from Judaism, but I sure as heck wouldn't use it to demonstrate his lack of bias.

His religion aside, Bob Novak has always been an Israel basher. Brian seems to think that because he's conservative he's "difficult to peg." But Israel-bashing has always been a staple of elements of the antisemitic right. Think Pat Buchanan and David Duke.

Israel bashing has also become fashionable among some fringe elements of the left, but in America that has been a more recent phenomenon. It has gained slightly more mainstream currency because the Bush administration knocked the Israel bashers out of the box. As such, some liberals mistakenly believe that support for Israel is a "conservative" cause.

Anon (1:34),

Throwing out gross generalisations will get you nowhere here. Trying to smear Pat Buchanan and Robert Novak by throwing in a David Duke reference we be ignored as it should be.

If you don't like a position taken by Bob Novak or Pat Buchanan then just argue with the position.

And I didn't say I couldn't peg Bob Novak because he was a conservative, I said he was hard to peg becuase he, among other things, contributed to National Review, a neocon publication.

Also, the Plame affair was a decidedly neocon operation.

Bob Novak and Pat Buchanan are Jew-haters. It's all in the record. Just do a Google search on either one. Buchanan has been an apologist for Hitler (as he is for Jefferson Davis and slavery). And Novak has admitted that he grew up despising the faith he was born into.
By endorsing their views, you are turning this website into an anti-semitic site.
And you are driving away Jews who despise AIPAC and what it is doing.
One more thing. NOVAK outed Valerie Pfame. HE IS A TRAITOR.

anonymous you are a tad off track on the main point...I don't know if Novak is a "jew hater" or not, never seen anything to indicate he is though....but I agree his outing of Plame was bordering treason...

Brian was just giving credit to Novak for the guts to even mention the Isralei part in the US mid east mess I think.

Just as there were several reasons for the Iraq war, with Israel being one of them...the neo's who brought it about all have their own motives, for some of them no doubt it is Israel, for others it is just power and for some delusional chickenhawk types they actually think force is the solution for all things USA.

So Novak may be a racist or anti gay or whatever but just like the various neo's that cooperated to get to Iraq, each for their own dirty purpose or belief, we can agree to acknowledge a truth uttered by Novak, even if it comes from a less than upstanding figure...to help build awareness of the issue.

Besides, the more the Novaks step out of character and out of step with the total neo clique the more people will pay attention and start to think.

Brian is absolutely correct with the above as I take the same perspective.. Novak sold out Valerie Plame (Ambassador Joe Wilson's wife) which was wrong, but he was a patriot for bringing up the AIPAC espionage on CNN's 'Capitol Gang' last weekend (Mark Shields had courage in saying what he did as well):

Scroll down (at the following URL) to read what Novak and Shields mentioned about the AIPAC scandal:

Pat Buchanan is usually not as strong on MSNBC about the neocons as he is in his articles (his ego apparently still gets a boost by him being on television). However, he was a patriot for writing the following 'Whose War?' article:

I don't agree with David Duke on every issue he addresses.. But to call him a Jew hater is not fair as he has dedicated his 'Jewish Supremacism' book to an Israeli Jew (Israel Shahak) who wrote the introduction to the following (Duke has also mentioned on his program which can be listened via the links at www.davidduke.com that not all Jews are Jewish supremacists):

A Strategy for Israel in the Nineteen Eighties

The following article includes reference of the above as it is what the Iraq invasion is all about:

Time Line: Why Franklin Arrest May Be Bigger Than We Know
by LITBMueller
Thu May 5th, 2005 at 12:00:06 PDT

I thought it might be interesting to put together a timeline of events concerning the arrest of Lawrence Franklin and compare it to when certain Neocons like Feith, Wurmser, Luti, etc. either decided to leave or were shuffled around, and out of the DoD.
By just poking around on the net, I found a lot more than I bargained for! Forgive me if this has been explored before, but, personally, I had no idea that the people uor country has been trusting with top secret intelligence information have had a history of violating that trust. That is why I think the arrest of Franklin may be a sign of bigger things to come.

Below is the timeline I pieced together. * = new update!

Diaries :: LITBMueller's diary :: :: Trackback ::

1970 - An FBI wiretap authorized for the Israeli Embassy picked up Richard Perle, then a Senator's staffer and working on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, discussing with an Embassy official classified information which he said had been supplied to him by a staff member on the National Security Council. An NSC/FBI investigation found the staff member, Helmut Sonnenfeldt, who had been previously investigated in 1967 while a staff member of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, for suspected unauthorized transmission to an Israeli Government official of a classified document concerning the commencement of the 1967 war in the Middle East. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

1978 - While working for the Arms Control and Disarmament agency in 1978, Paul Wolfowitz was the subject of an investigation that alleged he had provided a classified document on the proposed sale of U.S. weapons to an Arab government to an Israeli government official via an AIPAC intermediary. However, the probe was eventually dropped. (http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040824-102938-1916r.htm)

April 1979 - The Attorney General's office recommends that Dr. Stephen Bryen, then a staff member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, be investigated by a grand jury because he had been overheard in the Madison Hotel Coffee Shop offering classified documents to Israeli Embassy official Zvi Rafiah, the Mossad station chief in Washington, in the presence of the director of AIPAC. The investigation was eventually shut down and Bryen resigned. He then served as Executive Director of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA), and provided consulting services to AIPAC. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

1981 - Shortly before being appointed Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy (ISP), Perle was paid a consulting fee by an Israeli arms manufacturer, Soltam. Shortly after assuming his post, Perle wrote a letter to the Secretary of the Army urging evaluation and purchase of 155 mm. shells manufactured by Soltam. Bryen becomes Deputy to Perle and receives top secret clearances. Wolfowitz, as head of the State Department Policy Planning Staff, hires Michael Ledeen as a Special Advisor. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

1982 - Perle hires Douglas Feith to be his Special Counsel (he later becomes Deputy Assistant Secretary for Negotiations Policy). (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html) F. Michael Maloof also becomes an aide to Perle as Foreign Affairs Specialist. (http://www.findaresume.com/1985.html)

1983 - Feith is fired because he had been the object of an inquiry into whether he had provided classified material to an official of the Israeli Embassy in Washington. FBI had opened an inquiry into this allegation. (http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040824-102938-1916r.htm) Also, on the recommendation of Perle, Ledeen was hired at the Department of Defense as a consultant on terrorism, where his superior first became concerned that he was viewing classified material that he was not cleared to see. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

1984 - Ledeen leaves his position in DoD and joins the National Security Council (NSC) as a consultant. He suggests to Oliver North, his new boss at NSC "that Israeli contacts might be useful in obtaining release of the U.S. hostages in Lebanon." (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

August 20, 1985 - Ledeen's Israeli intelligence contacts are used to broker Iran/Contra. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/panorama/3031803.stm ) He worked with an Iranian named Manucher Ghorbanifar to set up the deal. (http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20040412&s=dreyfuss). Concerned over his relationship with Israel, NSC downgrades Ledeen's security clearance. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

January 24, 1986 - North writes to John Poindexter of his suspicion that Ledeen, along with Adolph Schwimmer and Ghorbanifar, might be making money personally on the sale of arms to Iran, through Israel. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

1986 - Feith leaves ISP to form a law firm in Israel. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html) Maloof becomes Chief of Technology Security Operations and, at the direction of Perle, creates a task force intended to respond to the growth of front companies created for the illegal diversion of technology for conventional and unconventional weapons. Serves in this role until 2000. (http://www.findaresume.com/1985.html)

1987 - After leaving the ISP in 1987, Perle goes to work for Soltam. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

1988 - Bryen is the key figures behind the attempted export of "klystrons," small microwave amplifiers that are critical missile components, to Israel. Bryen resigned his post with DoD in late 1988 and worked for several defense technology consulting firms. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

1992 - The first Bush Administration launches a broad inter-departmental investigation into the export of classified technology to China. During the investigation, it is discovered that Wolfowitz, as Undersecretary for Policy under Dick Cheney, was promoting the export to Israel of advanced AIM-9M air-to-air missiles. The Joint Chiefs of Staff, aware that Israel had already been caught selling the earlier AIM 9-L version of the missile to China in violation of a written agreement with the U.S. on arms re-sales, cancels the proposed deal. Feith writes in Commentary magazine, "It is in the interest of U.S. and Israel to remove needless impediments to technological cooperation between them. Technologies in the hands of responsible, friendly countries facing military threats, countries like Israel, serve to deter aggression, enhance regional stability and promote peace thereby." (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

1998 - Harold Rhode reportedly had his security clearances at DoD suspended, based on allegations he had given classified information to Israel, according to UPI in 2004. (http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040824-102938-1916r.htm)

2001 - As Deputy Defense Secretary, Wolfowitz helped Feith obtain his appointment as Undersecretary for Policy. Feith then appointed Perle as Chairman of the Defense Policy Board. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html). Rhode was officially assigned to the Pentagon's Office of Net Assessment, but was later involved in OSP. (http://www.globalexchange.org/countries/mideast/iraq/1448.html)

April 2001 - With the support of Wolfowitz and Sen. Richard Shelby, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert appoints Bryen a Member of the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission (his appointment is later extended through December of 2005). The Commission had been created in the last months of the Clinton Administration due to concerns about the continuing transfer of advanced U.S. arms technology to the burgeoning Chinese military program. It is suspected that this position, again, gives Bryen Top Secret clearance. Likewise, Ledeen is appointed to the China Commission and, with the support of Feith, he has also been employed as a consultant for the OSP. Again, both positions involve the handling of classified materials and require high-level security clearances. (http://www.counterpunch.org/green02282004.html)

June 2001 - Rhode meets with Ghorbanifar in Paris and discusses regime change in Iran. He had been introduced to Ghorbanifar by Ledeen, who had maintained his ties with him. (http://msnbc.msn.com/Default.aspx?id=3706341&p1=0).

September 2001 - Feith and Rhode recruit David Wurmser, the director of Middle East studies for the American Enterprise Institute, to serve as a Pentagon consultant. He helped create the secret Pentagon intelligence unit involved in developing Iraq intelligence. (http://www.globalexchange.org/countries/mideast/iraq/1448.html) Maloof is also assigned to assist with the organization of the unit. (http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2004/08/31/2d_probe_at_the_pentagon_examines_actions_on_i raq?pg=2)

* December 2001 - Rhode, Lawrence Franklin and Ledeen have meetings in Rome with Ghorbanifar and other Iranians and discuss regime change in Iran. White House officials OK'd what they believed was a Pentagon effort to gather info about Iranian terrorist activity in Afghanistan, but they didn't know Ghorbanifar was involved. (http://msnbc.msn.com/Default.aspx?id=3706341 and http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2004/0410.marshall.html&p1=0)

Early 2002 - Wolfowitz and Feith create an Iraq war-planning unit in the Pentagon's Near East and South Asia Affairs section, run by Deputy Undersecretary of Defense William Luti, under the rubric "Office of Special Plans" (OSP), into which the Wurmser-Maloof intelligence unit is folded. Luti had come to DoD by way of Cheney's office. Wurmser becomes senior adviser to Undersecretary of State John Bolton, who was in charge of the State Department's disarmament, proliferation, and WMD office and was actively promoting the Iraq war at State. OSP begins a relationship with Ahmed Chalabi, from whom they receive intelligence. (http://www.globalexchange.org/countries/mideast/iraq/1448.html). Rhode also serves as a liaison between the Defense Department and Ahmad Chalabi. (http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20040412&s=dreyfuss).

* February 2002 - Stephen Hadley learn about the involvement of Ghorbanifar in the 2001 meetings, and that regime change was on his agenda. They decide further contacts were "not worth pursuing," but Ghorbanifar continues to communicate with Rhode, and sometimes Franklin, by phone and fax five or six times a week (the contacts were not authorized by top Pentagon officials). (http://msnbc.msn.com/Default.aspx?id=3706341 and http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2004/0410.marshall.html&p1=0)

January 2003 - Maloof meets with a Lebanese-American friend, Imad al-Hage, who had been recruited by Maloof to assist in the War on Terrorism. Hage had met a Syrian intelligence official who had expressed frustration to him about the difficulties Syria faced in communicating with U.S. officials. Maloof arranged for Hage to meet Perle. (http://www.veteransforpeace.org/The_thwarted_Iraqi_110303.htm)

February 19, 2003 - Hage faxes a 3-page report on his Baghdad trip to Maloof. He indicates that the Iraqis have pledged to (1) cooperate in fighting terrorism; (2) give "full support for any US plan" in the Arab-Israeli peace process; (3) give " first priority [to the U.S.] as it relates to Iraq oil, mining rights;" (4) cooperate with US strategic interests in the region; (5) allow "direct US involvement on the ground in disarming Iraq." (http://www.veteransforpeace.org/The_thwarted_Iraqi_110303.htm)

March 7, 2003 - Hage meets with Perle and Perle tells him he wants to pursue the matter further with people in Washington; a few days later, he tells Hage that Washington refused to let him meet with Habbush or discuss any peace offers. As the month goes by, Hage continues to pass on urgent messages from Iraq to Maloof and others. Perle and others have knowledge of the peace overtures, but no action is taken. (http://www.veteransforpeace.org/The_thwarted_Iraqi_110303.htm)

May 2003 - Maloof is stripped of his security clearance after the FBI link him to a Lebanese-American businessman under investigation by the FBI for weapons trafficking. A handgun registered to Maloof had been found in the possession of Hage, who is suspected of dealing arms. Investigators begin to seek to learn whether Maloof's alleged contacts with Hage and a hard-line former Lebanese general, Michel Aoun, may have been part of a back-channel effort to destabilize Syria, which has occupied Lebanon for nearly two decades. (http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2004/08/31/2d_probe_at_the_pentagon_examines_actions_on_i raq?pg=2 and http://www.veteransforpeace.org/The_thwarted_Iraqi_110303.htm)

June 2003 - Rhode meets with Ghorbanifar in Paris and discusses regime change in Iran, but his communications with Ghorbanifar end shortly thereafter. The meeting had not been authorized by the Pentagon. (http://msnbc.msn.com/Default.aspx?id=3706341&p1=0)

June 26, 2003 - FBI observes Franklin divulging secret information re: Iraq to AIPAC's Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman while having lunch. (http://www.marinij.com/Stories/0,1413,234~24410~2853235,00.html)

June 30, 2003 - FBI find the document Franklin disclosed in his office, pursuant to warrant, and Franklin admits his guilt in an interview. FBI search Franklin's home and find 83 documents of various levels of classification being held illegally. Franklin is stripped of his security clearance. (http://news.findlaw.com/cnn/docs/dod/usfrnkln50305cmp.pdf).

September 2003 - Wurmser is moved from State to Dick Cheney's office, under Scooter Libby, as Middle East adviser. (http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/1020-10.htm)

August, 2004 - FBI gets Franklin to pass a fake tip re: a plan by Iran to attack Israeli operations in the Kurdish regions of Iraq. Rosen and Weissman pass the info on, and fall into the trap. FBI raids AIPAC offices. Franklin later stops helping FBI, fires his public defender, and hires a top a D.C. defense lawyer. (http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0331/dailyUpdate.html)

August 24, 2004: UPI reports that Rhode and Luti are being investigated by FBI for passing classified material to Israel. (http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040824-102938-1916r.htm)

August 27, 2004 - CBS reports on the Franklin case, and it becomes public. (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/08/27/eveningnews/main639143.shtml)

December, 2004 - FBI raids AIPAC once more. Grand jury subpoenas are issued to four top staffers: Howard Kohr, executive director; Richard Fishman, managing director; Renee Rothstein, communications director; and Raphael Danziger, research director. (http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1111807178234&a page=1)

January-February 2005 - Several of the above four top AIPAC staffers testify before a federal grand jury convened by U.S. Attorney Paul McNulty. (http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1111807178234&a page=1). AIPAC places Rosen and Weissman on paid leave and Franklin is quietly rehired at the Pentagon, against the FBI's wishes, in a non-sensitive position. (http://www.jewishtimes.com/News/4683.stm).

Late January 2005 - Douglas Feith announces he is leaving his post later this year, (http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20050126-054711-1300r.htm), but he will still be involved in setting defense policy. Specifically, the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR). (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A2638-2005Apr19.html)

(http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002172910_jacksonpapers07m.html) Besides Perle, Feith is a former Jackson staff member (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/2/15/201851/101) (Thanks to Miss Devore and the Kos diary of Thistime) March 7, 2005 - Bolton nominated to be next UN Ambassador. (http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/03/07/bolton/index.html).

Pat Buchanan: Nazi Apologist.

Was World War II worth it?

In the Bush vs. Putin debate on World War II, Putin had far the more difficult assignment. Defending Russia's record in the "Great Patriotic War," the Russian president declared, "Our people not only defended their homeland, they liberated 11 European countries."

Those countries are, presumably: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Finland.

To ascertain whether Moscow truly liberated those lands, we might survey the sons and daughters of the generation that survived liberation by a Red Army that pillaged, raped and murdered its way westward across Europe. As at Katyn Forest, that army eradicated the real heroes who fought to retain the national and Christian character of their countries.

To Bush, these nations were not liberated. "As we mark a victory of six decades ago, we are mindful of a paradox," he said:

For much of Eastern and Central Europe, victory brought the iron rule of another empire. V-E day marked the end of fascism, but it did not end the oppression. The agreement in Yalta followed in the unjust tradition of Munich and the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Once again, when powerful governments negotiated, the freedom of small nations was somehow expendable. ... The captivity of millions in Central and Eastern Europe will be remembered as one of the greatest wrongs in history.

Bush told the awful truth about what really triumphed in World War II east of the Elbe. And it was not freedom. It was Stalin, the most odious tyrant of the century. Where Hitler killed his millions, Stalin, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pot and Castro murdered their tens of millions.

Leninism was the Black Death of the 20th Century.

The truths bravely declared by Bush at Riga, Latvia, raise questions that too long remained hidden, buried or ignored.

If Yalta was a betrayal of small nations as immoral as the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, why do we venerate Churchill and FDR? At Yalta, this pair secretly ceded those small nations to Stalin, co-signing a cynical "Declaration on Liberated Europe" that was a monstrous lie.

As FDR and Churchill consigned these peoples to a Stalinist hell run by a monster they alternately and affectionately called "Uncle Joe" and "Old Bear," why are they not in the history books alongside Neville Chamberlain, who sold out the Czechs at Munich by handing the Sudetenland over to Germany? At least the Sudeten Germans wanted to be with Germany. No Christian peoples of Europe ever embraced their Soviet captors or Stalinist quislings.

Other questions arise. If Britain endured six years of war and hundreds of thousands of dead in a war she declared to defend Polish freedom, and Polish freedom was lost to communism, how can we say Britain won the war?

If the West went to war to stop Hitler from dominating Eastern and Central Europe, and Eastern and Central Europe ended up under a tyranny even more odious, as Bush implies, did Western Civilization win the war?

In 1938, Churchill wanted Britain to fight for Czechoslovakia. Chamberlain refused. In 1939, Churchill wanted Britain to fight for Poland. Chamberlain agreed. At the end of the war Churchill wanted and got, Czechoslovakia and Poland were in Stalin's empire.

How, then, can men proclaim Churchill "Man of the Century"?

True, U.S. and British troops liberated France, Holland and Belgium from Nazi occupation. But before Britain declared war on Germany, France, Holland and Belgium did not need to be liberated. They were free. They were only invaded and occupied after Britain and France declared war on Germany – on behalf of Poland.

When one considers the losses suffered by Britain and France – hundreds of thousands dead, destitution, bankruptcy, the end of the empires – was World War II worth it, considering that Poland and all the other nations east of the Elbe were lost anyway?

If the objective of the West was the destruction of Nazi Germany, it was a "smashing" success. But why destroy Hitler? If to liberate Germans, it was not worth it. After all, the Germans voted Hitler in.

If it was to keep Hitler out of Western Europe, why declare war on him and draw him into Western Europe? If it was to keep Hitler out of Central and Eastern Europe, then, inevitably, Stalin would inherit Central and Eastern Europe.

Was that worth fighting a world war – with 50 million dead?

The war Britain and France declared to defend Polish freedom ended up making Poland and all of Eastern and Central Europe safe for Stalinism. And at the festivities in Moscow, Americans and Russians were front and center, smiling – not British and French. Understandably.

Yes, Bush has opened up quite a can of worms.

Truthseeker, thanks for the Timeline.

Anon, the years sleeping confortable in the warm arms of state-sponsored history will make your awakening a bitter one. If you're not ready, go back to sleep. Buchanan is no nazi apologist, he is just warning you sleepyheads there are fouler beings than nazis. Beware, for right now these beings walk among you.

"Leninism was the Black Death of the 20th Century."

What could possibly be more fair?!

From an article (or here) by James Janega from Knight Ridder (which remains the only honest newspaper chain in the United States; my emphasis in bold):

"The Marines who swept into the Euphrates River town of Ubaydi confronted an enemy they had not expected to find - and one that attacked in surprising ways.

As they pushed from house to house in early fighting, trying to flush out the insurgents who had attacked their column with mortar fire, they ran into sandbagged emplacements behind garden walls. They found a house where insurgents were crouching in the basement, firing upwards through slits hacked at ankle height in the ground-floor walls, aiming at spots that the Marines' body armor did not cover.

The shock was that the enemy was not supposed to be in this town at all. Instead, American intelligence indicated that the insurgency had massed on the other side of the river. Marine commanders expressed surprise Monday not only at the insurgents' presence but also the extent of their preparations, as if they had expected the Marines to come."

How do the insurgents always know when the Americans will show up? How did they know just what hotel room to fire at when Wolfowitz was in Baghdad? How do they know exactly when and where to deploy their improvised explosive devices so they are in place just before the Americans drive by?

Larry Franklin talked to the AIPAC dudes almost two years ago. What's the one thing he could have told them two years ago which would be still grievously affecting the ability of the American army to deal with the insurgency in Iraq? The Israelis are able to assist the insurgents because they know the details of the Saddam-era and post-Saddam-era American counterintelligence operations in Iraq. As the spies for the insurgency are able to avoid the American counterintelligence assets in Iraq (and may have even 'turned' some of them), the Americans have no way to root out those who are gathering information on American plans. The agents of the insurgency are able to consistently spy on the American occupying army, and know what the Americans are going to do before most of the Americans know. This explains why the insurgents are clearly winning.

Why would supposed American ally Israel want to help the insurgency, or at least part of it? Based on the ideas of Oded Yinon, the plan is to break Iraq up into small, unthreatening mini-states. The Israelis are trying to start an Iraqi civil war. To this end, the Israelis are hoping to pin the Americans in Iraq for as long as possible in a vain attempt to prevent this war. The Americans will only pull out when civil war is inevitable, which will be another huge embarrassment for the Pentagon. On top of that, the slow American defeat in Iraq, based on the perfidity of the Israelis in supporting the insurgency and undermining American counterintelligence in Iraq, is gradually destroying the American military (although no one in the Bush Administration will admit it). This effort means the Israelis are effectively currently engaged in war operations against the United States. This undeclared war by the greatest ingrate in the world, Israel - hundreds of billions of dollars in aid from American taxpayers to Israel, and this is the thanks they get! - has made the paleocons furious, and explains why the neocons have been unable to stop the AIPAC investigation.
