Yet, from 1985 to 2000, the now-indicted Scooter Libby represented Marc Rich, one of the most notorious organized crime figures in the world, a man who, while on the lam from the U.S., systematically looted post-Soviet Russia and mentored many of the "oligarchs" in corrupt practices. When Libby's 15 years of work paid off with a pardon for Rich in the last hours of the Clinton Administration, after frantic entreaties for Rich by high figures in the Israeli government, opprobrium rightfully rained down on Bill Clinton's head. And yet, Libby immediately moved into the crucial position of chief-of-staff to Vice-President Cheney.
If Libby had spent the previous 15 years representing John Gotti, he couldn't have attained such a high position in the government. What is it about working for Marc Rich that made Libby largely immune to criticism?

I almost fell over when CNN actually did mention Libby's ties to Rich after the Fitzgerald press conference.
But then immediately my darker, more suspicious self stepped in -- Israel is blackmailing both parties and what better way to keep them in line than mentioning Libby's ties to Clinton's infamous pardon of Rich?

About two years ago I heard a woman from the Carnegie Endowment for Peace or whatever it's called, speak on a local NPR show (OK, don't shoot me -- I don't listen to NPR usually, only Pacifica)
She was talking about the Russian oligarchs and she said that almost all of them were Jews, and that was one of the reasons some had used their automatic dual citizenship to flee to Israel when Putin cracked down.
She was a Jew herself, so I was surprised at her candor. Not that I think all Jews are gung-ho supporters of Israel, it's just that in my experience Israel is the Achilles heal of Jews everywhere -- even if they disagree with the Israeli government's policies, many will still defend her vehemently. Although none in my experience seem keen to move there and do it physically ;-)
Not all Jews of course: many are as furious with Israel's government's actions as the many Americans who are going ballistic over ours. It's very sad that all Jews seemingly are starting to get tagged by the acts of some, like the neocons and the oligarchs.
I know the racists in my community do the same with blacks -- one black crime and all blacks are looked at with suspicion.
However there should be no quarter given to Libby, Perle, Feith, Wolfowitz, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Kerry, Clinton, Pelosi, Feinstein, and anyone who lied us into war or supported it.
They knew the truth and do now but their money comes from either rich American Jews (the Democrats) or Christian Zionists and rich American Jews (the GOP).
We need to divorce Israel and do it now, before more of our kids die in her wars. Then we should hang any politician who supports Israel's welfare over our own.
America was founded on freedom -- how free can we be if we're held in thrall by a tiny, very troublesome, country and her supporters? We're not.

Yes, one of the (many) subjects which polite folks are not allowed to mention is that the oligarchs happen to be Jewish with strong ties to Israel. Which is a pity, because it's only by knowing this that we can make sense of the American media's hostile coverage of Putin. (Remember all those spins of Khodorkovsky as a "reformist" being persecuted for his democratic views? LOL) Putin's struggle against the oligarchs can be seen as an attempt to thwart growing Jewish control over the Russian media.

Anon 7:23 -- you should read the recent Pape book on suicide bombers, it's gotten a lot of press because of his thorough research.
I only read the reviews but, if I remember correctly, suicide bombing was unheard of in the Middle East until the Israel/Palestine conflict.
In any case, Muslims are not innately suicidal: it's a measure of their desperation that they will use their own bodies against the enormous firepower of the US and Israeli militaries. To paraphrase an old favorite song, "When you ain't got nothing you got nothing to lose..."
I agree. Suicide bombing may be evil, but more so is the systematic and deliberate reduction of the entire middle east region to a state of barbarism by the denial of true economic development.
Bastards like Wolfowitz and Kissenger caused the current state of affairs in the region by reversing the "atoms for peace" policy of Eisenhower.
There is also the case of mutated so called "religions" - the age old tools of Imperial conquest. Desperate, uneducated people will do stupid things when they have no other options to change their world.
